Bringing mihygge however you are, wherever you are, whenever…
My past career as a Geriatrician appreciated elderly in every situation, some out playing tennis, a game of cards, bingo, some in an electric wheelchair whizzing by on the curb of a busy street, stopping at the signs and proudly reaching their destinations, while others bedbound, due to many different underlying conditions or at the end of their lives…
While they lived their lives , what mattered most to them were the sense of cozy living…
Believe it or not, many had lived and were living… not just thriving or surviving… for each, the sense of wellbeing and cozy living or mihygge was a very different path, journey or way..
While we seek to help the elderly by curbing their diets, activity sometimes due to their underlying medical conditions, there is also a need to let them live their lives wholesome…
Here are ways that we worked on to bring happiness, joy, sense of belonging in our elderly’s lives…we will visit another beautiful section on this through the kind eyes of a caregiver…
- Admiring beautiful cut flowers in the vase in our reception area
- Wishing every occasion with much positive greetings
- Celebrating birthdays and milestones
- Sharing a bag of fresh veg / fruits with a homebound elderly
- Appreciating little improvements made by the elderly no matter where they lived
- Listening with a purpose even if they were hard of hearing or speech…
- Being vigilant and making sure they were cared for in the best atmosphere
- Helping them with any info they needed, and not underestimating them
- Clearing all doubts and taking the time to explain the plan of action
- Wishing them a gratitude filled good bye at the end of our encounters or visits…
For many, these may seem trivial, but for our elderly a little means a lot. If we are to bring back mihygge into every day, thing, moment, life… then we must have a vision, a mission and a purpose… we should make it a part of our lives, our own well being, so in order to serve others we have enough to give and receive…A cozy living is however we are, whoever we are, wherever we are …and whenever…
Gifting mihygge to an elderly does not have an end or a beginning… there are no dates, times, deadlines, simply mihygge… or life’s simple pleasures!
